Student Activities

The university is not only a place for studying and education. In fact, it is a great environment to expand the students’ experiences and talents in various cultural, social, artistic, and sport fields. Such extra-curricular activities develop the students’ personality and enrich their characters with information about the nature of society and the role of culture in the development process, as well as spreading cultural, literary and artistic awareness. Student activities creates and strengthens the social connections between students and faculty members, as they are one of the most important ways for students to integrate withing the society, whether on campus or outside the university. It also helps students implement activities that are compatible with their tendencies and desires, and instils the spirit of worth and belonging to the community, the university and the homeland. Besides, these interactions provide a form of entertainment of students during the study period and helps them to acquire a variety of skills.

Student activities are divided multiple form and in a variety of fields. The University of Babylon has a department that takes care of its students’ community with many committees for student activities. These activities include trips, camps, group recreational activities, parties and recreational competitions (such as chess and “the ideal student” contests), field trips, and organizing seminars and conferences for students. As for the artistic and literary activities, they aim to develop hobbies and highlight the students’ artistic talents, such as vocal classes, music classes, drama lessons and plastic arts training. Most universities, led by the University of Babylon, support these forms of interactions through a special budget for student activities. As for community services, the university encourages students individually or in groups to submit a plan for manual activity through the Student Welfare Department. This activity aims to instil the principles of selflessness, independence, effort, giving and innovation, as it depends on arts and handicrafts. For sports activities, the University provides sport halls equipped with the latest sports equipment, and green sports fields for the practice of various sports. The university organizes a large number of competitions in football and other sports at different colleges, among both students and faculty members to create sense of team spirit. In conclusion, cultural activities provide many opportunities for students to freely express their views on community issues and participate in solving the problems they face, as well as providing the opportunity for creative students in various fields of literature to show their talents in poetry, fiction writing and other literary arts.
