Professor Dr. Amean Ajeel Al-Yasir, president the University of Babylon , participated in the International Conference of UNESCO Chairs held by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in cooperation with the UNESCO Office in Baghdad, with attendance from the scientific deputy, heads of Iraqi universities, and researchers and academics from Iraqi, Arab, and foreign universities alongside experts from international organizations.
At the start of the conference, the Deputy Minister for Scientific Research Affairs, Dr. Haider Abdul Zahid, confirmed that the ministry, under the guidance of Minister Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, is advancing the establishment of new UNESCO Chairs in several Iraqi universities, in addition to the existing chairs at the Universities of Kufa, Baghdad, Mosul, and the American University in Baghdad.
The ministry is actively organizing conferences and scientific workshops to strengthen research cooperation with universities and global institutions, contributing to consolidating internationalization, enhancing the academic reputation of Iraqi universities, and developing educational curricula.
Mr. Alexandros Makarigakis, Director of the UNESCO Office in Baghdad, highlighted that the conference marks a crucial milestone in strengthening higher education, promoting intercultural dialogue, and supporting pathways for peace and sustainable development through academic cooperation. He expressed appreciation for the ministry’s continuous support and initiatives in education, vocational and technical training, and higher education development projects in Iraq.
The conference, attended by Dr. Abdul Majeed Bin Amara, Secretary-General of the Union of Arab Scientific Research Councils, discussed key topics including policies regulating the use of artificial intelligence in education and international experiences of UNESCO Chairs in integrating principles of coexistence and dialogue within curricula.
The event concluded by honoring a distinguished group of academic and scientific figures from Iraqi, Arab, and foreign universities and international organizations in recognition of their contributions to advancing higher education and scientific research.
