The Center for Environmental Research and Studies at the University of Babylon has issued the second edition of its quarterly newsletter, "Window on the Environment," for June 2025, in both print and electronic formats. The newsletter aims to shed light on environmental issues locally and globally, and to raise community awareness for building a sustainable environment. The editorial board was chaired by Dr. Huda Sami Al-Hassan, and included Dr. Sarab Azeem Joudah and Engineer Mubeen Issam Mohammed, with the participation of distinguished researchers from the center.
This edition addressed warnings about the continued rise in global temperatures in 2025 due to human activities, fossil fuel burning, and the El Ni?o phenomenon, calling for urgent international action towards renewable energy. The newsletter focused on supporting efforts to improve the environmental reality in Iraq by publishing research and encouraging institutional and community cooperation.
The main topics of this edition included:
• Climate disasters and their consequences, and the need for international action.
• Sustainable fashion and its impact on reducing water consumption and emissions.
• Innovative solutions for treating polluted water using floating plants, and an Iraqi study on plant-based chitosan.
• Global initiatives such as the "Champions of the Earth Award" and the "Green Asphalt Revolution" in China.
On the activities front, the university organized the second environmental festival under the slogan "Clean Environment... A Future for a Sustainable World," which included scientific exhibitions, environmental and health initiatives, and artistic events. The university also held the first scientific forum for sustainable universities, launched an international platform for sustainable development, and participated in the "Third International Future Week for Sustainability" festival, presenting research results in pollutant removal and renewable energy. The newsletter was distributed electronically to all colleges and departments of the university.
