Under the joint organization of the Center for Environmental Research and Studies and the College of Islamic Sciences, a scientific symposium was held under the patronage of the President of the University of Babylon, Prof. Dr. Amin Ajil Al-Yasiri, and under the direct supervision of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Mansour Al-Khafaji, and the Director of the Center, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huda Sami Al-Hasan. The symposium was titled "Sustainable Environment: Between Reality and Ways to Achieve it in Iraq" and was held on Monday, April 7, 2025, at the hall of the College of Islamic Sciences.
The symposium began with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by student Sajjad Ahmad Rizouqi from the College of Arts, followed by a welcoming speech by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huda Sami Al-Hasan. She emphasized the importance of sustainable development in preserving the environment, considering it a fundamental pillar for building cohesive societies capable of facing challenges. The sessions were chaired by Prof. Dr. Leila Mustafa Abdul Karim and Dr. Zahra Hussein Obaid.
The symposium included two main lectures. The first, delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hind Mufid Awad, was titled "Sustainable Development in Iraq: A Vision for a Brighter Future and an Aware Generation." The lecture discussed the goals and principles of sustainable development, focusing on the strategic use of alternative energy due to its abundance and ability to provide sustainable and economic energy. She stressed the importance of enhancing community and institutional awareness through awareness campaigns, noting that Iraq has unique potential for building a green economy based on low-cost and environmentally friendly resources.
The second lecture, presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zahra Hashim Adhab, was titled "Sustainable Environment and Water Treatment: Innovations for a Greener Future in Iraq." She presented an innovative vision for treating polluted water through her research and scientific team, focusing on economically and technically feasible solutions in Iraq. She emphasized the role of innovation in converting wastewater into a useful resource, contributing to achieving a sustainable environment that balances environmental and developmental needs. She stressed the need for cooperation between researchers, state institutions, and the utilization of their research by institutions supporting scientific research to create a clean society free from pollution.
The symposium concluded with the distribution of participation certificates to the lecturers and some participants by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huda Sami Al-Hasan. The Director of the Center and all affiliates appreciated the Dean and Vice Deans and heads of departments of the College of Islamic Sciences for providing the opportunity for cooperation and benefiting from the Center s outputs to enrich the academic journey and raise the status of the beloved university.
