A team from the Materials Engineering College at Babylon University has developed an innovative medical apron that provides superior protection against X-rays, outperforming imported versions. This project is currently seeking a patent from the Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control.Under the supervision of Dr. Ahmed Fadel Hamza and Dr. Mohammed Hamza Al-Mamouri, researcher Dr. Ahmed Ihsan Jassim created a "Nano Composite Shield from Medical Silicone Rubber for Protection Against X-rays," designed as an alternative to traditional lead aprons. The new aprons are made with chlorophyll-infused silicone rubber, enhancing safety for both radiation workers and patients.Weighing only about 2 kilograms, these lightweight aprons are significantly more comfortable than conventional lead aprons, which can weigh up to 7 kilograms, reducing discomfort and back pain during use. Dr. Hamza highlighted the project s significance for public health, especially as it nears patent approval, noting the serious health risks associated with excessive X-ray exposure. This advancement marks a crucial step in improving safety standards in medical environments, offering a flexible, effective, and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional radiation protection methods.
