Dr. Amir Mazhar Hadi, a medical virus specialist at the DNA Research Center, conducted a lecture titled "Cancer Viruses." The lecture provided an overview of cancer-causing viruses, classified into DNA and RNA types. Dr. Amir emphasized viruses that lead to cancer by integrating their genetic material into host cells or generating cancer-related proteins (oncogenes). Key viruses discussed included human papillomavirus (HPV), a major cause of cervical cancer, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) linked to stomach and nasopharyngeal cancer, as well as herpes simplex virus 8 associated with Kaposi sarcoma. Dr. Amir elaborated on the mechanisms through which these viruses cause cancer, affecting cellular functions and promoting uncontrolled cell growth by disrupting cellular control systems.
