The Center of Environmental Research and Studies at the University of Babylon held a scientific symposium on "Prospects for sustainable development in Iraq", in the presence of a number of professors and specialists in the environmental field. The seminar included two lectures, the first of them addressed environmental challenges in sustainable development in Iraq and was delivered by Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim al-Dhufairi who discussed the main environmental problems facing Iraq in the implementation of the sustainable development goals , which include 17 objectives endorsed by the United Nations, including the problem of water and desertification, solid waste management, air pollution and the deterioration of agriculture.

The second lecture, however, touched on the economic dimension of sustainable development, and was delivered by Dr. Jawad Kazem al-Bakri, highlighting the need to direct the economy to agriculture and industry rather than oil being the main source of export, developing human capacity, activating the private sector, and supporting investment by setting up projects, reducing imports and increasing exports.
